Description: All of us have difficulty listening in noisy situations, whether they be at home, in a mall, or a party. Children with hearing loss struggle so much more with less noise than we can tolerate. This presentation will focus on the acoustics of speech, how this is affected by noise in the environment, at home, and in the classroom. The presentation will encompass the following sections:

What are the acoustics of speech how is listening affected by noise?

Assessment of acoustic conditions, assessment of the child’s performance in the classroom

What can we do about it? Strategies for the classroom, home and other noisy places

There will be an opportunity to ask questions and participate in discussion regarding current acoustic environments in the school and at home.
